The Ontario Association of Optometrists have indicated that they may withdraw their services from Ontario's Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) effective September 1, 2021 if an agreement cannot be reached with the Ontario Government.
Should this occur, optometrists will no longer provide routine eye exams to individuals ages 19 and younger, and ages 65 and older. By law, these patients cannot pay for this service directly and by the same law, insurers cannot cover the cost of these patients’ service. This includes private insurance plans and workplace plans. Please consult with your optometrist before making an appointment to confirm what will be covered.
If you have dependents ages 19 and younger, or 65 and older, you cannot cover the cost of an eye exam through your Health Care Benefit plan, or your Health Spending Account (if applicable).
Please note, Sun Life will continue to repay eligible claims for eye exams for dependents, ages 20 to 64.
We will continue to monitor the communications and we will alert you when changes are made.
